Just to show you that some PUPs in this regard are bad actors who are too lazy to bother, we bring you a fake online scanner that experts say was used to promote the notorious MacKeeper and a Windows body optimizer called Advance. System maintenance.

Windows

From the hacked website, our employees were redirected to the systemcheck[.]club, where everyone received this popup:

Fortunately, this helpful person knew about the anti-virus tool on our PC and also led us to www[.]advancepctools[.]info:

Here we turned to Advance-System-Care, which did not find these viruses, but gave some very important advice on how to slow down the system. Tip:

Pro this mobile number will not work because it usually contains a format error.

The fact that Advance-System-Care did not detect the claimed virus is not surprising since Tapsnake is an Android infestation that does not run on Windows computers. Miscellaneous

One problem that confused me was that even if I visited the systemcheck[.] club site, I also got this prompt:

Windows Internet Prompt Explorer tells me “VIRUS DETECTED. This is required to service your Mac. Please do not leave the site. Click OK to begin the recovery process.”

but I proved it to our Mac researchers, these companies found a very plausible explanation. https://thefixitshop.net same misunderstanding is being used to promote MacKeeper on Mac systems.

My colleague @thomasareed recorded the process of installing MacKeeper on the market leading Mac system:

You have the option to review the scan and the results of the scan are usually exactly the same. MacKeeper is only compatible if it accurately detects the same threat (Tapsnake) on every system.

Conclusion

While this setup seems to be aimed at Mac users, it shouldn’t be considered a waste of time to do anything to Windows users who have been sucked into it. So a reasonable PUP system optimizer needs to be provided via a redirect for each of these users.

Detection and protection

The website hosting the fake scanner and all subsequent steps in the redirect chain are blocked by Malwarebytes Premium Web Protection.

Malwarebytes completely removes Advance System Care. For removal and advanced system maintenance tips visit our forums. Thank you

Special thanks to @thomasareed for sharing his research on the Mac side, and @MysteryFCM for pointing out a non-url.
